Ali is a writer with a deep appreciation for fragrance and the way scent shows up in everyday routines. She believes laundry detergent should smell intentional and elevated (never overpowering or chemical) while still being gentle enough for daily wear. When she’s not testing clean home products, she’s comparing perfumes, reading ingredient labels, and playing with her dog Rover!

Over the years, I’ve become more intentional about the products I use everyday, especially the ones that sit on my skin for hours. Laundry detergent ended up on that list once I started learning more about the potential hormone disrupting ingredients in leading brands.
The problem is that most clean laundry detergent options smell overly soapy or like nothing at all, while traditional detergents rely on heavy synthetic fragrance. So I set out to research & find a clean detergent that smells luxurious (like my favorite perfumes, colognes) and that doesn't harm my skin.

Everyone approaches laundry differently, but for me the scent has to smell premium, not soapy or overpowering. I look for detergents that pair a perfume-like fragrance with effective plant based ingredients that are gentle on the skin, and leave no heavy residue.
✅ A refined / luxurious scent (like some of my favorite perfumes I wear everyday)
✅ Plant-based enzymes that actually clean
✅ Skin safe formulas designed for sensitive skin
✅ No overpowering residue on clothes
✅ Eco-conscious packaging
To keep the testing consistent, I washed similar everyday loads (tees, loungewear, sheets) using each detergent over a few cycles. Every brand was evaluated using the same criteria so the experience, not just the scent, was comparable.
1. Researched & Selected Top Clean Detergents
Chosen based on ingredient transparency, brand philosophy, customer reviews, and scents they offered.
2. Reviewed Ingredient Lists
Assessed plant based enzymes, fragrance sourcing, skin safety claims, and the absence of harsh fillers.
3. Tested Cleaning Performance
Evaluated how well each detergent handled everyday dirt, sweat and odors without lots of residue.
4. Evaluated Scent Quality
Judged fragrance and how it smelled on clothes after drying, not just straight out of the bottle.
5. Assessed Skin & Fabric Feel
Paid attention to irritation potential, softness of clothes, and whether any scent lingered way too long.
6. Scored Each Brand
Each detergent was scored across scent, performance, skin friendliness, and overall experience to determine the final ranking.

✅ Luxury inspired, fine fragrance scents (one scent smelled like Le Labo which I love)
✅ Plant based enzymes that clean effectively.
✅ Gentle, skin safe formula for sensitive skin.
✅ No heavy residue or fabric buildup.
✅ Eco-friendly, recyclable tin packaging.
❌ Need a tablespoon to measure it out (wish they would provide a measuring spoon).
❌ Premium pricing compared to mass detergents.
Premium fragrance: Smells expensive and like top of the line colognes / perfumes
Cleans and leaves nothing behind: Ingredients are skin safe which was one of my biggest things I looked for.
Lots of different scents to choose from: I especially like their sample kit which allowed me to try a bunch of scents.
Measuring the detergent: Including some sort of measurement device would be good, but I just used a normal tablespoon which was fine.

✅ Luxury inspired fragrances
✅ High end packaging and branding
✅ Easy to measure
✅ Generally gentle on skin
❌ Scent doesn’t last beyond 24 hours
❌ If you want to do 1.5 pods you have to use 2 pods there’s not an easy way to do half pods
❌ Expensive to continually use weekly
❌ Possible micro plastics in their detergents
The fragrance experience is genuinely luxurious: Lots of different scents to choose from, but I wish they would do a variety pack and some scents are hit or miss.
The branding and packaging feel high end: It looks beautiful on a shelf and feels like a lifestyle product, not a utility item.
The scent don’t last as long as other competitors tried: This was the biggest letdown for me. For a brand that’s so fragrance led, the scent faded faster than others that I tested out
Pods create inflexibility: Tough to do half loads with pods and I personally like the pour aspect vs. pods

✅ Hotel lobby style scents
✅ Plant based, non toxic formula
✅ 5x concentrated (a little goes a long way)
✅ Gentle on delicates and specialty fabrics
❌ Very expensive for every few days laundry cycles
❌ Small bottle size for the price
The scent is luxurious: I tried the sandalwood variant, and it smells like walking into a high end hotel or luxury retail store.
It’s excellent for delicate fabrics: This is where L’AVANT really shines. I use it for sweaters, intimates, and nicer pieces where I want something gentle and fabric-safe.
The price adds up fast: As much as I enjoy it, this isn’t realistic for everyday laundry. I treat it more like a specialty detergent than a daily staple.
The scent doesn’t last as long as expected: It smells incredible in the bottle, but once clothes are dry, the fragrance becomes very subtle, almost too subtle for the price.

✅ Great fragrance
✅ Gentle on skin
✅ Works well on everyday fabrics
❌ Confusing dosing system
❌ Not as many scents as other brands I tried
Skin friendly: Experienced no skin irritation and clothes felt softer coming out of the drier
The sustainability angle I really liked: Knowing that a tree is planted with each purchase makes the brand feel more intentional.
The dosing and load count are confusing: The pump instructions don’t quite align with the promised number of loads, which makes it harder to assess.
Some scents smell like cheap perfume: A few scents like Bergamot didn’t deliver and it was super disappointing especially considering the price point

Finding a clean laundry detergent that smells actually good isn’t as straightforward as it should be. A lot of formulas prioritize being “natural” at the expense of scent, while traditional detergents lean heavily on synthetic fragrance that can feel overpowering or irritating over time.
After testing each of the above detergents across multiple loads, it became clear that the biggest differences weren’t just about cleaning power, they were about how intentional each brand was with scent. Some formulas smelled incredible in the bottle but faded quickly. Others cleaned well but left behind a soapy or artificial finish. A few managed to strike a balance between fragrance quality, skin-friendliness, and everyday performance.
If scent is something you genuinely care about (and you want your clothes to smell refined rather than loud) the details matter. Ingredient choices, fragrance composition, and how a detergent wears on fabric all add up over time. Hope this helps and please reach out with any questions or comments!
